TOKYO — Automatic revolving doors have become increasingly popular with Japanese architects. They help buildings efficiently regulate heat and air conditioning systems, they’re easy to operate in high-rise complexes that create gusty winds, and they lend an air of technological sophistication.

But these days, most of the 466 automatic revolving doors in Japan are idle. The shutdown has occurred following the death this spring of a 6-year-old boy who was crushed by a 1-ton revolving door at Roppongi Hills in Tokyo, a glitzy entertainment and business complex featuring a 54-story high-rise.

On March 26, Ryo Mizokawa removed his hand from his mother’s grip and darted into the fast-moving revolving door, his 3-foot, 8-inch frame just shy of the machine’s infrared motion detectors. The automatic doors kept moving even after Ryo’s head became caught between the door and frame. Ryo, an only child, and his mother were visiting the year-old complex from the Osaka region……

my question is how often does this really happen? not just deaths but how many injuries are caused by revolving doors annually? i tried my best to find it but i can’t find anything. i simply want to know how hazardous this one everyday thing is

Revolving Doors: There were 12,231 injuries involving revolving doors alone in 2004. A 37-year-old woman was hit in the ankle so hard with a fast-moving revolving door that her anterior tibial artery ruptured and she died of internal bleeding. Since 1970, mechanical devices, including revolving doors, escalators, auto lifts, and automatic doors have caused 7,491 fatalities.

A voice actor essentially works harder than a Hollywood superstar. It is quite difficult for a voice actor to put feelings and emotions to what he is reading, all the while knowing that he’s not seen on screen. He must get into the skin of the character and pump life into the dialogues. It is in this area where voice over training is essential.

Voice over training helps voice actors understand the craft and find gainful employment in a growing area. There are 1000s of cartoon and animated TV shows, web shows, TV/radio advertisements, web videos, and movies being made continually. Moreover, each movie/TV show has a cast of more than 20-30 characters. There are global opportunities galore for a voice actor.

Basic skills needed to join a voice over training course

Diction is one of the most important tools of the trade. The student must have perfect enunciation and for that reason must attend speech classes to get his diction properly. Every voice over actor has two roles to fulfill – “lending voice” and “acting.” This means that getting a perfect diction is not adequate to be able to join a voice over training, enrolling in an acting course is also essential for the student.

What does a voiceover training program teach?

The student learns how to evaluate and interpret commercial copy for announcer and real-person roles. Interpreting narrative copy, as well as technical copy, are learned as well. The course educates the student how to proficiently coordinate mind, mouth and voice so that he can sound true to his character. Taking direction is also mastered by the student.

A great voice actor training program makes students read, record, play back, listen, and then do it all over again until they get it right. Students warm-up and perform vocal exercises and learn techniques like timing, inflection, and articulation. They understand how to maintain their voice fitness. Half-way into the voice over training course, students become adept at using and modifying tone, pitch, delivery speed and volume for a selection of jobs.

After the main training is over, students learn how to promote their skills, tap the appropriate contacts, and get voice over work. Instructors of the voice over program also help them in creating a voice over demo, which would become part of their portfolio. A solid voice over training course provides students the opportunity to work in a real studio and fully grasp what they should and shouldn’t do in a sound booth and when behind the microphone.

Selecting a voice over training course

There are two facets to voice training. Students who are attracted in selling must opt for a commercial voice over course. Commercial voice overs are employed for selling. Several of the areas that require this type of voice overs are radio ads, TV advertisements, phone and other media features. Selling skills are also covered by a voice over course considering that all commercial voice overs sell a service or a product. This course does not include acting skills. Students who are interested in showbiz must opt for a TV and movie voice over and dubbing program. Such courses require lip-synching, and so the voice over actor has to learn acting skillsets too.

Like in Shopko the doors that swing out how do they work. How do they swing out automatically?

There is a sensor that detects someone approaching the door. It could be a switch in a floor mat or an ultrasonic device that receives an echo from an approaching customer.

The sensor operates some sort of electric motor that drives a mechanism that opens the door.
